Even if you were the best housekeeper before you had the baby, there are probably a few pieces of Lego hiding between your sofa and cushions now! And even if you were a little slack before, you are most likely facing more muddy shoes, broken crayons, and smudgy fingerprints than you imagined. It may seem like you have only two choices – clean 24/7 or throw in the towel even before you have tried to wipe anything with it. However, there is a happy medium tried and tested by many mums. Here are some of the strategies;

  • Prioritise the messes: If you decide to clean your house from top to bottom, you will exhaust yourself long before you’ve achieved your goal. Instead concentrate on the high-traffic rooms like the kitchen, bathrooms, lobby, living room and any room that visitors may see during the next week – say your child’s room if she had a play date. Decide what you will do within each room too. For instance grab the laundry basket and gather up the clutter that belongs to another part of the house, so you can get a clear view of the big picture. Deal with the top five or six gripes and leave the others for the next week.

  • Collect some key cleaning tools:Keep handy some of your favourite cleaning tools. The following can be very useful:
    - Microfiber cleaning cloths: They can absorb fluid and attract dust naturally.
    - A glass cleaner
    - A multipurpose cleaner
    - A scrub brush
    - Disinfecting wipes

  • Break it down:Estimate the total number of minutes you would require on housecleaning and divide it by the total number of rooms you want to tackle. Add a few minutes to it to give a little cushion and then set a timer. Then start with the dirtiest or most-used area and take a top down approach. Begin with tasks that are at or above eye level and leave the floor for last. Dust furniture with a microfiber cloth and use the glass cleaner for windows and mirrors. Use disinfectant wipes aggressively on things that are handled frequently like doorknobs and telephones. If the room has a focal point, spend extra time in that area. Make sure your living room is crumb-free and of course make your bed neatly in the bedroom. Lastly, sweep or hoover the floors. Use the remaining time to put away any clutter.

  • Know when to stop:When your timer rings make sure you stop. If you feel the urge to do that one more last task, make sure you keep a note of it and start with that task the next time you clean.

Cleaning is quite a hard and annoying task. Add some fun to it – listen to your IPod when you clean, that should definitely get you moving. Of course once you have finished get yourself a Yummy Mummy Treat. Enjoy!!
