Having twins means much more than simply having two babies at once and this challenge goes beyond having twice the work or pleasure. Very often twins are born early and therefore tend to be smaller than the average baby. Caring for twins can be extremely challenging so try and get as much help and support from your family and friends.

From the very beginning it is critical to recognise that your twin babies are two separate individuals. As similar as they may appear physically and emotionally they are different and in order to grow up happy and secure as individuals they need you to support their differences. Both identical and fraternal twins may become either competitive or interdependent as they grow. Sometimes one of them acts as the leader while the other follows. Whatever their specific quality of their interaction, most twins develop very intense relationships early in life simply because they spend a whole lot of time together.

Twins require a large amount of your time and energy and will attract a great deal of extra attention from friends, relatives, and even from random people on the street. If you have other children ensure that you spend some quality one on one time with them. Twins are not always happy being apart, especially if they have established strong play habits and have preferences for each other’s company. For this reason it is important to begin separating them occasionally as early as possible. If they resist strongly, try a gradual approach using very familiar children or adults to play with them individually but in the same room or play area.

As much as you appreciate the individual differences between your twins, you will no doubt have certain feeling for them as a unit. Helping them understand and accept the balance between these two identities will be one of the most challenging tasks facing you as the parent of twins.

There is a lot of support system available out there for mums who have multiple births. Mummy Network respects and supports all you great Yummy Mummies who care for and take care of your twins.
