Important health tests every Yummy Mummy should take
Mums never miss taking their kids for their immunisations or forget to book their husband’s dental appointments. They even remind their mums of their mammogram exams. But when was the last time you went to see your doctor for a medical check-up? You probably don’t even remember. It’s really important for you to take care of yourself and take all those necessary tests. Here are a few tests every yummy mummy should get done. 1. Periodontal Exam This is a routine cleaning and examination of your gums and teeth. You should get this exam done twice a year, but if you are pregnant you are more prone to gum disease so make a date with your dentist every three months! 2. Full Blood Count This test evaluates how your bone marrow and immune systems are functioning. You need to get this test done immediately if you think you are anemic. Otherwise this test needs to be done once a year. 3. Thyroid Stimulating hormone test: This test screens for an overactive or underactive thyroid. The classic new mom symptoms of feeling tired and forgetful are also symptoms of hypothyroidism. If you are trying for another baby this is an important test to take as a thyroid disorder can stop your ovulation. This test should be performed once a year. 4. Cervical Screening: This is a swab test to detect precancerous and cancerous changes in your cervix. If it comes back abnormal your doctor may biopsy suspicious areas on your cervix. This test needs to be done once in three years. 5. Blood pressure and cholesterol tests:These two tests access how healthy your heart is and your risk of heart disease. Blood pressure should be checked annually. Blood pressure less than 120/80 is ideal. LDL cholesterol limit should be below 130 and HDL above 50. 6. Fasting Blood sugar test:: This test checks for diabetes and measures the sugar in your blood after an eight hour fast. You should take this test if you have a history of diabetes in your family and if were diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy. 7. Bone mineral density test: This test checks for osteoporosis and measures bone density. It also reveals if you need more calcium. Now that you have a basic idea of the tests you need to take, go on and make the next doctor’s appointment for yourself. I’m sure you won’t regret this decision. |
